March Kickoff
On March 25 (Wednesday), dive into the “A szépíró olvas” literary series with writer Halász Rita chatting with literary historian and critic Bódi Katalin. It’s free! The next day, March 26, catch “SZIMBÓLUMOK FORRADALMA – Az őskorkutatás új irányai” (Revolution of Symbols – New Directions in Prehistoric Research), a slide lecture by archaeologist Dr. Hajdú Zsigmond, retired chief curator, in the museum’s Díszterem. Ticket: 1000 HUF ($2.70).
April Adventures
April 8 brings historian and curator Váradi Katalin’s free gallery tour “A cívisváros az évszázadok viharában” (The Cívis City Through Centuries of Storms). On April 9, join her for “Belvárosi barangolás a cívisek nyomában – Megmaradás és megújulás” (Downtown Stroll in the Footsteps of the Cívisek – Survival and Renewal), a city history walk. April 10 features a free slide lecture, “A debreceni Szent András-templom és ferences kolostor régészeti kutatásának eredményei” (Results of Archaeological Research on Debrecen’s St. Andrew’s Church and Franciscan Monastery), by archaeologist D. Szabó László. On April 11, chief curator Mező Szilveszter leads “AHOL A MAGYAR FŰVÉSZET ÉS TERMÉSZETVÉDELEM BÖLCSŐJE RINGOTT” (Where the Cradle of Hungarian Horticulture and Nature Conservation Rocked). April 21, “A szépíró olvas” returns with poet-writer Tóth Krisztina and literary historian Baranyai Norbert—free. Earth Day on April 22 features Mező Szilveszter’s book launch “PERZSELŐ RÉUNION – Trópusi napló” (Scorching Réunion – Tropical Diary), introduced by Dr. Hajdú Zsigmond; his slide show “DÉL KERESZTJE ALATT” (Under the Southern Cross) on a mysterious South Seas island with skinny dodos and fat pigeons; plus a screening of the 30-minute documentary “RÉUNION – A TŰZ ÉS A VÍZ FÖLDJE” (Réunion – Land of Fire and Water), made in 2003 by Fekete István and Mező for Nyíregyháza City Television (Nyíregyházi Városi Televízió). On May 6, “A szépíró olvas” spotlights writer Ménes Attila with curator Pótor Barnabás—free. On May 14, Mező Szilveszter’s slide lecture “LA PLATA, AZ ‘EZÜSTTÖLCSÉR'” (La Plata, the ‘Silver Chalice’) recounts his backpacking trip along South America’s record river delta in Uruguay and Argentina.
