March 15: Minerals and Mushrooms Spring Adventure in Csobánka
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, we head to Csobánka for an easy, family-friendly trek where everyone plays mineral hunter. Hunt UV-active barite at the site, including eye-popping 8-12 inch crystal clusters – kids go wild for it. The spot is a breezy 30-minute walk away; meet up, then 1 km hike or drive to the upper parking lot. Every participant gets to take home as many minerals as they grab. (2014 Csobánka photo).
March 27-29: Birch Sap Tapping Fest in Mátraszentimre
From March 27-29, 2026, Mátraszentimre revives viricselés – birch sap harvesting – under the Open Gates in Mátraszentimre events, with crafts, foodie fun, and a market. Viricselés taps birch sap only in spring when the sap flows. Packed with nutrients, minerals, trace elements, and vitamins, it cleanses the lymph, detoxes the body, reduces inflammation, boosts immunity, and alkalinizes the body. Topically, it nourishes the skin, hydrates, and fights greasy or flaky scalp. Patience required – draining 170 ounces takes about 3 days, so heaps of village programs keep folks hooked for the full Mátra Mountains (Mátra) stay.
March 29: Mountain Quartz Chase in the Upper Mátra Mountains (Mátra)
On March 29, 2026, we scour 3 sites in the Upper Mátra Mountains (Mátra) for surface quartz crystals – no digging needed, so everyone scores plenty. Local mountain quartz averages 0.2-0.8 inches, but 1-1.6 inchers pop up here. Pack a backpack – clusters hit bedrock, and one box won’t cut it. Grab a mason’s hammer to shift leaves or chip waste rock. Haul home whatever you collect.
