dónde: 8200 Veszprém, Veszprémi Várnegyed

Veszprém’s Castle District is back in full swing, blending quiet strolls with deep dives into a thousand years of history. Anyone can wander along Castle Street (Vár utca), but the heart of the historic quarter opens only with guided castle walks. That’s where stories unfold in sequence: the St. Michael’s Cathedral (Szent Mihály-székesegyház) and its crypt, St. George’s Chapel, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the intimate Gizella Chapel. With every doorway, the restoration reveals more of the city’s layered past and the careful craft that brought it back to life.

How to Visit

The renewed historical spaces of the Castle District are accessible on guided castle walks offered in multiple week-long blocks throughout June: June 2–7, June 11–14, June 15–21, and June 22–28. The gathering point for organized programs is the Biró–Giczey House at 31 Castle Street (Vár utca 31), in the center of the district (8200 Veszprém). While the main Castle Street is open to casual visitors, entry into the storied interiors requires a guide—both to protect the heritage and to connect the dots between places that span centuries of sacred and civic life.

Weekly Documentary Screenings

Every Friday at 5:00 p.m., the Archbishop’s Palace hosts a screening of 1000 év öröksége – A veszprémi várnegyed megújítása (1000 Years of Heritage – Renewing the Veszprém Castle District). Tickets are about 2.75 USD, with a maximum of 20 viewers per session, and attendees gather at the Biró–Giczey House before heading into the Palace. The film traces the restoration of the district’s historic buildings, the renewal of its sacred and community spaces, and the expert work that reopened the quarter as a living cultural venue. It’s a peek behind the scenes of conservation, architecture, and heritage preservation—and a clear-eyed account of how a once-closed enclave became public again.

Museum Night: Puzzles, Faith, and Flowers

On June 20, Museum Night turns Veszprém’s hilltop into a playground of ideas and sleuthing. At the Biró–Giczey House, the award-winning temporary exhibition Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalens) doubles as a mystery game for families. Visitors are challenged to decode hidden messages in artworks and find “the true path,” where small details carry the answers. The hunt is kid-friendly, playful, and unforgettable. Advance registration is required by email: gizellamuzeum@veszpremiersekseg.hu.
Over at the Queen Gizella Museum (Gizella Királyné Múzeum), the exhibition and roundtable Ne féljetek! (Do Not Be Afraid!) probes the Catholic Church’s historical role on the path toward freedom. How did the Church become a symbol of hope under communist dictatorships in Central Europe? Curated by the St. Adalbert Foundation with Hungarian, Czech, and Polish collaborators, the show premiered in Prague and arrives in Veszprém after stops in Szombathely and Székesfehérvár.
Back at the Biró–Giczey House, Museum Night also offers Magdolnák virágai (The Flowers of the Magdalens), a hands-on craft session linked to the Thistle and Lily exhibition. Children and playful adults can explore what the thistle and lily symbolize—then make a flower of their own.
