Veszprém’s revitalized Castle District is gearing up for a packed 2026 with guided walks, free exhibitions, spiritual gatherings, and festival highlights stretching from spring into late summer. The storied hilltop quarter opens rarely seen interiors, celebrates local heritage, and hosts headline concerts during VeszprémFest—making it one of Hungary’s must-visit cultural hubs this year.
Guided Castle Walks
Weekend guided tours delve into a thousand years of history at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks open spaces normally closed to the public. The Archbishop’s Palace reveals Baroque interiors, renewed rooms, and standout artworks. Gizella Chapel, among the oldest and quietest sacred spaces in the district, preserves evocative medieval fresco fragments. St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt anchor the city’s skyline, combining the basilica’s layered past with medieval details below ground for a vivid picture of Veszprém’s origins. St. George’s Chapel, a venerable site in the heart of the castle, can only be visited on guided tours. Walks start from the Biró–Giczey House; check the events calendar for up-to-date times and changes.
Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All exhibitions are free during opening hours. Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalenes), winner of the 2025 Exhibition of the Year, presents Mary Magdalene through artifacts, engravings, and contemporary reflections, interwoven with thoughts by Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi. The Pantry Exhibition offers fragments from the cathedral’s past—Baroque objects, liturgical pieces, and 100-year-old photos. The interactive Not Exactly a Chapter Head explains who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter worked, in an engaging, accessible way. An archaeology showcase traces the castle hill’s changing settlement history with striking installations and finds.
Gizella Day Prayer, May 8
At 19:00 on May 8, an intimate, one-hour Gizella Day prayer will be held in the Gizella Chapel at the initiative of Archbishop György Udvardy, honoring Queen Blessed Gizella, wife of state founder King Stephen I and patron behind St. Michael’s Cathedral. Bishop Ignác Koller placed the Gizella relic here, deepening the chapel’s historic and spiritual resonance. Space is limited; advance registration is required. Due to the chapel’s conditions, seating cannot be brought in, so attendees should be prepared to stand throughout.
