Nature, stays, and bites
Make time for Lillafüred—the Hámori Lake, the neo-Renaissance Palace Hotel (Palotaszálló), the terraced Hanging Garden, and Hungary’s highest vertical waterfall. Whatever the season, it’s a soul-filling escape. In Miskolctapolca, Europe’s only warm therapeutic Cave Bath is the city’s spa icon: several guesthouses and hotels sit a few minutes’ walk away.
Choices range from a freshly renovated guesthouse on Aradi Street in Tapolca (a 5–6 minute stroll to the Cave Bath) to the Alfa Hotel & Wellness Center near the ancient park, offering a cozy vibe plus conference space. The upscale Avalon Resort & Spa Superior (Avalon Resort & SPA***** Superior) blends sleek design with wood warmth: 31 rooms, two junior suites, two luxury suites, 15 HONKA log houses, and a 15-room Forest Design wing opened in 2021. For group getaways, a key house on the Bükk’s Little Plateau sleeps 14 with tile stoves, four rooms, a living room, kitchen, cellar, and terrace—pure peace and pine-scented freedom.
Downtown, City Hotel Miskolc**** serves local flavors and comfort with air-conditioned rooms, LCD TVs, minibars, and free Wi‑Fi, plus an accessible room. Close to Diósgyőr Castle, Várkert Panzió delivers views of the Bükk and swift tram or bus links—20 minutes to either Lillafüred or the city center. Another Tapolca hotel, a monumental yet airy build with terraces and pergolas, sits two minutes from the Cave Bath, the ancient park, and the boating lake, gazing out over the Bükk ridgeline.
For dining, the medieval-tinged Mátyás Restaurant (Mátyás Étterem) serves from fall to spring with stained-glass windows depicting historic Hungarian cities and a menu spanning Hungarian, regional, and international dishes in season. The Michelin-recommended Avalon Ristorante is a love letter to Italy: seafood, pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and standout desserts. As the Guide notes, they serve simply good food—ideal for a long, happy family lunch.
