Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
Weekends bring the most popular program with tours kicking off at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock spots you can’t visit alone: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, revamped spaces, and special artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the oldest and quietest sacred spot in the castle quarter where surviving fresco fragments create a medieval mood; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, the city’s defining building whose basilica history and medieval crypt details paint a true picture of Veszprém’s past; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial in the castle’s core, accessible only on guided tours. Check the event calendar for exact times and changes.
Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House

The “Kamrakiállítás (Chamber Exhibition)”—details from the cathedral’s past—features Baroque items, liturgical pieces, and over 100-year-old photos. “Nem káptalan a fejem (No Chapter on My Head)” is an interactive display that playfully explains who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated. The archaeological exhibit uses eye-catching installations to show the castle hill’s evolving settlement history and finds.

New Underground Spots Boost Veszprém’s Castle Tours
The castle district’s story gets a fresh chapter as popular guided tours add two thrilling sites. Now you can venture underground into the crypt of St. Michael’s Cathedral and uncover the remains of St. George’s Chapel, making a thousand years of history visible.
St. Michael’s Cathedral and Crypt take you deep into the thousand-year tale: see the 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Padányi Bíró Márton’s Baroque tomb, and the restored interior. The crypt’s atmosphere—silence under vaults, time locked in stone—will be a tour highlight.
St. George’s Chapel, north of the cathedral, is one of Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations revealed the original 10th-century rotunda foundations. Tradition holds that Prince Emeric vowed here before the Virgin’s altar, giving it sacred significance. In medieval times, it was a top pilgrimage spot housing the head relic of St. George, gifted by the Byzantine emperor to King Stephen.
Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups. The castle quarter fully reveals its riches—walk it to grasp the buildings’ past and the millennium-shaping spirit of Veszprém, the queens’ city.
Tours take place April 3–12 and 18–19, 2026, at 10:30, 14:00, and 16:00 daily in Veszprém. Organizers reserve the right to change times and program!
