The Torah is the ultimate brain food, helping us understand the world and ourselves. Understanding it calms you like a sip of your favorite tea, filling you with that cozy home vibe. Every Tuesday, join the 5 PM Tea & Torah with Rabbi Shalom Ber at the Jewish House in Kecskemét, Katona József tér 12, 6000 Kecskemét.

Women’s Singing Circle Rocks Óbuda

No need to introduce our regular choir leader Liora, but what magic sparks from all that feminine energy this time? You’ll find out right there, in the moment. This women-only event offers a special connection. They say free singing is the shortest path to yourself, and singing together bonds you to others. Community matters, and it’s good to remind ourselves now and then: being together feels great. Singing together? Even better. With Liora? The best. They might record photos and audio for the website and social media. It’s free but requires registration. Doors open 5:30 PM at Óbuda Synagogue (Óbudai Zsinagóga), 1036 Budapest, Lajos utca 163, 3rd District, Óbuda. Happening March 17, 2026.

Havruta Study House Thrives in Zsilip

Third year of nonstop success for Havruta – the paired learning house – every Wednesday (and Mondays too) at Zsilip, Újpesti rakpart 1, Budapest 13th District. For Jews, learning isn’t just academic; it’s core to our worldview, values, and lifestyle. The plural isn’t accidental – Judaism isn’t solo. Its power comes from community, where we’re all a part. Our study house builds on love of learning and community commitment, like yeshivas: small groups pondering ancient wisdom together. This gap-filler opens Zsilip’s doors to every knowledge-thirsty member. Schedule: Wednesdays 5:30 PM Messianic Era, philosophy, halacha with Rabbi Baruch Oberlander; 6:30 PM Book of Mitzvot, 613 commandments with Rabbi Jonatán Megyeri. Mondays too: 6:30 PM weekly parsha with Rabbi Sámuel Glitzenstein; 7:30 PM women’s role in Judaism with Rebbetzin Sarah Nógrádi. Kicking off March 18 and 25.

KiddieTime Delights Óbuda Kids

Every Wednesday 4:30-6 PM, afternoons belong to kids at Óbuda! Music, learning, play, movement – everything Jewish for 3-10 year olds. Age-grouped program in three parts: First, musical session with parents; then kids learn Judaism playfully while parents boost their Hebrew in a language course; finally, parents rejoin for krav maga class. Óbuda Synagogue (Óbudai Zsinagóga), Lajos utca 163. March 18 and 25, 2026.

Szentendre Baking Bash

Food tastes best made with love – especially holiday feasts. Lucky us, we celebrate weekly, Shabbat every Friday night for sure. Rebbetzin Tzivia turns dinner prep into community magic in her cherished kitchen. Meet Thursday March 19, 6:30 PM to bake tomorrow’s treats together. Jewish House Szentendre, Pátriarka utca 6, 2000 Szentendre.

TalkSlo: Poet János Lackfi on Heaven’s Kippah

Jewish men wear tiny kippot to express God’s eternal presence. Don’t wear one? The infinite sky’s your kippah overhead, like János Lackfi says in Fejemen az ég kipája (The Sky’s Kippah on My Head). Lackfi seems to be everywhere, his boundless energy checked only by the body’s frailty. Super productive, hugely popular. He nearly died chasing life, but knew: sky kippah on his head. He knew grandma survived the Holocaust, her WWII trauma unlocked late by dementia. Rabbi Slomó Köves starts the chat on life, identity, joy, the infinite – what everything’s about. No phones or electronics in shul for Shabbat sanctity. First floor, stairs only, no accessible bathroom. Óbuda Synagogue (Óbudai Zsinagóga), Lajos utca 163. March 20, 6:30 PM. $28, or $24 with Haver card.

Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School Returns

Sunday kids’ program back at Zsilip! Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School launches anew in the two-level playhouse and study rooms hub. Young enthusiastic team welcomes 4-14 year olds (and teens) 10 AM-12:30 PM for age-group sessions: prepping holidays, mitzvot learning, traditions, lifelong values. Tiny tots, pre-bnot mitzvah, whatever – made for you! Újpesti rakpart 1. March 22 and 29.

Israeli Breakfast Workshop Szentendre

Brain guzzles 20-25% of body’s energy? Feed the mind, body follows! Our thematic cooking class goes beyond eats and techniques – spirit first. Sure, mostly cooking adventures, but each starts with short learning intro like appetizer to the menu. Led by Rebbetzin Tzivia Myers. Chef Balázs Sepsi runs workshop. Register and pay on-site, $14 fee. Pátriarka utca 6, March 22.

Kabbalah Lessons with Rabbi Oberlander

Rabbi Baruch Oberlander invites all Mondays 7 PM to Kabbalah class at Vasvári Pál Street Synagogue (Vasvári Pál utcai Zsinagóga), Vasvári Pál utca 5, 1061 Budapest, 6th District, Terézváros. March 23.

March Book Club Heartbreaker

Eszter Babarczy’s Apám meghal (My Father Is Dying) diaries track six months shadowing her dying dad – famed theater director, institution head, home-hell leaver – through mental/physical decline’s steep lonely path despite shared trials. The unreachable famous dad and craving daughter closest ever in forced end-life reliance. No talks now, so notes appended to diaries hunt his story, forge theirs. Angry-empathetic, passionate-detached report on inevitable death duty we all face, raw honest grief-healing amid rage. Chat at Brooklyn Bagel, Újpesti rakpart 1, 1137 Budapest. $4. March 25.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly with kid-focused gems like KiddieTime and Zsiliputi Sunday School mixing music, play, Hebrew for parents, and even krav maga – way better than generic tourist traps for traveling families.
+
Plunges you into authentic Jewish community life like Torah teas, havruta study pairs, and baking nights that echo Chabad events back in the States but with a cool Hungarian twist.
+
Budapest's a total rockstar for US tourists – easy direct flights, iconic spots nearby, and these events slot right into a Danube cruise or thermal bath vacay.
+
Public transport's a breeze: metro/trams to Óbuda and Terézváros, quick HEV train to Szentendre or Zsilip, even Kecskemét's just 1.5 hours by Intercity train, no car needed.
+
Jewish topics like Kabbalah, mitzvot, and Shabbat prep are internationally familiar, especially if you're from NYC or LA with big Jewish scenes – no culture shock.
+
Compared to US equivalents, it's cheaper (many free, workshops $14-28) and more intimate than crowded JCC classes or Birthright trips.
+
Huge variety in one month – singing circles, poet talks, Israeli breakfast workshops – keeps things fresh without feeling cookie-cutter. - Events mostly in Hungarian/Hebrew with little English support, so you'd struggle without basic language skills or prior Jewish knowledge.
Cons
Spread across Budapest's outskirts (Óbuda, Zsilip), Szentendre, and distant Kecskemét, turning it into a mini road trip instead of one-stop fun.
Niche Jewish buzz isn't globally famous like a Taylor Swift concert or Oktoberfest, so it's more insider discovery than bucket-list hype.
Locked to specific March 2026 dates with registration for some, tough to sync with US spring break or random Euro hopping.
