Tea & Torah Every Tuesday with Rabbi Shalom Ber

Join the 5 PM Tea & Torah every Tuesday with Rabbi Shalom Ber. Location: 6000 Kecskemét, Katona József tér 12. It runs on March 17, 24, and beyond.

Women’s Learning with Liora – Joint Singing

Our occasional choir’s steady leader needs no introduction, but what sparks from female energies this time? It’ll unfold right here and now! This women-only event offers special connections. Word is, free singing is the shortest path to yourself – and together, to each other. Community matters, no need to stress it, but reminders hit right: being together feels good. Singing together? Even better – with Liora, the best! Location: 1036 Budapest, 3rd District – Óbuda, Lajos utca 163. Kicks off March 17.

Havruta – House of Joint Learning, Mondays and Wednesdays

Third year of unstoppable success! At Zsilip, Havruta continues: Mondays and Wednesdays, two hours each. For Jews, learning isn’t just academic – it’s core to worldview, values, and lifestyle. The plural fits because Judaism isn’t solo; its power stems from community, where we’re all players. Our study house builds on loving learning and community commitment, like yeshivas: small groups pondering ancient wisdom together. This gap-filler opens Zsilip’s doors to every knowledge-thirsty member!

Schedule: Wednesdays 5:30 PM – The Era of Messiah; philosophy and halakha with Rabbi Baruch Oberlander. 6:30 PM – Book of Mitzvot; the 613 commandments with Rabbi Jonathan Megyeri. Mondays: 6:30 PM – Weekly Parsha with Rabbi Samuel Glitzenstein. 7:30 PM – Woman’s Role in Judaism with Rebbetzin Sarah Nógrádi. Location: Budapest, 13th District, Újpesti rakpart 1. Runs March 18, 23, 25.

KiddieTime Every Wednesday 4:30–6 PM in Óbuda

Afternoons belong to kids! Music, learning, play, movement – everything Jewish for 3-10-year-olds. Age-grouped program in three parts: Kids and parents start with musical activities together, then kids learn Judaism playfully while parents boost Hebrew on a language course. Parents rejoin for krav maga to wrap up. Location: 1036 Budapest, 3rd District – Óbuda, Lajos utca 163. On March 18, 25.

March Joint Baking in Szentendre, March 19 at 6:30 PM

Food tastes best made with love – especially for holiday feasts. Lucky us, celebrations weekly, Shabbat every Friday eve for sure. Rebbetzin Tzivia turns dinner and cooking into community magic in her cherished kitchen. Meet Thursday, bake Friday’s treats together! Location: 2000 Szentendre, Pátriarka utca 6.

Fejemen az ég kipája – TalkShow’s March Guest: János Lackfi, March 20

Jewish men wear tiny kippahs to express the Eternal’s presence. No kippah? The infinite sky’s your headwear, like János Lackfi’s title. Lackfi seems everywhere, boundless energy checked only by body’s frailty. If life’s rewarding productive souls with acclaim, it’s him. Nearly died chasing life, but knew the sky-kippah topped him. Knew his grandma survived Holocaust, trauma sealed till late dementia cracked it. Rabbi Slomo Köves starts their chat on life, identity, joy, infinity – what everything’s about. Location: 1036 Budapest, 3rd District – Óbuda, Lajos utca 163.

Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School, Sundays 10 AM–12:30 PM

Sunday kids’ program returns to Zsilip! Relaunched as Zsiliputi Jewish Sunday School. Hundreds of kids who spent Sunday mornings there still rave about games (and playful learning). Back renewed in the two-level playhouse and study-room-packed Zsilip Center. Young, enthusiastic team welcomes 4-14-year-olds (and teens) for age-group sessions: prepping holidays together, mitzvot learning, tradition intros, lifelong values. Tiny tot, budding teen, pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah? This school’s for you! Location: Budapest, 13th District, Újpesti rakpart 1. March 22, 29.

Israeli Breakfast Workshop

Did you know your brain guzzles 20-25% of body’s energy? Feed the mind, body thrives! Our themed cooking course goes beyond gastronomy and techniques – spirit leads. Sure, mostly cooking adventures, but each starts with short learning as appetizer to the menu. Intro learning: Rebbetzin Tzivia Myers. Workshop lead: Chef Balázs Sepsi. Location: 2000 Szentendre, Pátriarka utca 6. March 22.

Kabbalah Class with Rabbi Baruch Oberlander, Mondays 7 PM

Everyone welcome to Kabbalah lessons with Rabbi Baruch Oberlander, Mondays 7 PM at Vasvári Pál Street Synagogue! Location: 1061 Budapest, 6th District – Terézváros, Vasvári Pál utca 5. March 23.

March Book Club

László Babarczy, Eszter’s dad, was a legendary theater director and institution head. Home life left countless scars. Eszter’s healing starts with this farewell. In gripping diary entries, Eszter recounts six months escorting her ailing father through steep mental and physical decline – a lonely path despite shared trials. The unreachable famous dad and craving daughter never got this close till forced end-of-life reliance. No talks now, so notes appended to diaries seek to know and find him, unearth their story. Apám meghal (My Father Dies) is angry yet empathetic, passionate yet detached report on the inevitable we all face, plus raw honest tale of rage-tinged grief and healing. Location: Budapest. March 25.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly with tons of kid-focused events like KiddieTime for 3-10-year-olds mixing music, play, and Jewish learning, plus parent activities like Hebrew classes and krav maga
+
Budapest's a hotspot for U.S. tourists, and spots like the 3rd and 13th Districts or nearby Szentendre are doable day trips blending right into sightseeing
+
Jewish topics like Torah study, Kabbalah, and Shabbat baking are pretty well-known internationally, especially if you've got any interest in spirituality or culture from U.S. synagogues or Chabad centers
+
No Hungarian skills needed – events led by English-speaking rabbis (names like Shalom Ber scream international vibe), and universal themes make it accessible for foreigners
+
Easy to reach via public transport: Budapest events on metro/trams from city center, Szentendre's a quick scenic HÉV train ride, Kecskemét about 1.5 hours by comfy intercity bus or train
+
Feels authentic and community-driven compared to more commercial Jewish events in places like NYC's museums or Israel's tours – intimate, free/cheap, and joyful without the crowds
+
Huge variety from tea chats and singing to book clubs and Israeli breakfast workshops keeps it fresh and engaging for a week's vacation filler
Cons
These specific Jewish community events aren't super well-known to casual foreign visitors – you'd stumble on them via niche searches, not like Budapest's thermal baths or ruin bars
Some spots like Kecskemét (90 mins away) or Szentendre require planning extra travel time by car or train, eating into lazy tourist days
Women-only singing or certain study groups might limit mixed-family participation
Book club on a Hungarian memoir could feel insider-y if it's mostly in local language, less ideal for non-speakers
