Eger is rolling out a full-throttle week of concerts, talks, festivals, screenings, exhibitions, markets, and family adventures across multiple venues from May 4 to May 10, 2026. From rockabilly and organ recitals to cat shows and vineyard walks, the city keeps every age busy and entertained.
Wine, Walks, Talks
Start midweek with the Kadarka Vineyard Hike & Wine Tasting, a roving discovery of Eger’s signature grape at its source among the vines. On May 6, two brain-tickling talks arrive: Dr. Barbara Szentgyörgyi unpacks the gut–brain–immune–hormone axis at a Nyitott Akadémia (Open Academy) evening, while psychologist Sándor Beke’s Narcissism: In the Trap of the Mirror is free with registration.
Big Screen Adrenaline
Action fans get a pre-premiere screening of Mortal Kombat on May 6. In this brutal, high-stakes tournament, even winners can die, and a reluctant, washed-up Hollywood actor named Johnny Cage gets dragged onto the stage with the old champions for a decisive showdown of light vs. darkness.
Family Days in the Gárdonyi Garden
The István Dobó Castle Museum reprises its popular family programs on May 6 and May 10 at the Gárdonyi House. Expect storytelling, hands-on crafts, and offbeat guided tours spotlighting Géza Gárdonyi’s legacy and the joy of reading.
Literary Jam, Opera Magic
On May 7, the Rhyme and Rhythm Literary Jam: The Legend of Antal Szerb lands at the EKMK Forrás Youth House (tickets from $6.70). The same night, Zsolt Prieger and Bori Magyar present The Legend of Antal Szerb, a poetic, surreal yet realist fantasia woven from acoustic and projected imagery, cityscapes, romances, pop and classical cues, Italian hits, contemporary violins, improvisation, and visions steeped in Journey by Moonlight (Utas és holdvilág). Also on May 7, tune into London’s Covent Garden as The Magic Flute beams into Eger cinemas.
Exhibitions to Stroll
Through May 7, Life Paths pairs painter Mária Bárány (France) with sculptor Pál Bárczi “80” at Agria Park Gallery, free entry. From May 4–8, Rudolf Szilágyi’s Singing Birds fills a sensory landscape of invisible layers—trilling birds, blooming trees, bees, animals, and village soundscapes in quiet symbiosis. From May 5–10, Three of a Kind gathers towering photographic voices: André Kertész (the most successful), László Moholy-Nagy (the most valuable), and Robert Capa (the most famous). Also May 4–10, The World I Gaze Into showcases Egri Waldorf School students in Agria Park’s first-floor community space, while The Sacredness of Life, a traveling show in the Basilica, presents Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, patron of mothers, doctors, and unborn children.
Comedy, Theatre, and Laughs
On May 8, Eszeveszett Primadonnák, avagy nyakig a slamasztikában hits the Béla Bartakovics Community House (from $13.10–$17.10). May 9 brings Laurent Baffie’s sharp-witted comedy Lököttek, packed with buoyant humor and unforgettable melodies (from $16–$18.70). For families on May 9, The Moody Princess is a musical, interactive tale for ages 4–99 at EKMK Forrás (tickets $5.20).
Music, Markets, and Motors
May 9 is stacked: the Black ’n’ White Rock ’n’ Roll Weekend roars into Végvári Vitézek Square after the American car parade, with the Tom White Rockabilly Show. The Eger Symphony Orchestra performs Seductive Scents. EgerKör’s city-circling bike tour invites all comers. The Producers and Crafts Market fills the Eger Market Hall (Egri Piaccsarnok) with nearly 90 local makers. The Lifestyle & Crystal Expo offers minerals, scented candles, teas, honey, and wellness goodies. The Eger Basilica hosts short organ recitals all weekend and again May 16–17 and May 23–24.
History Reopens
Memorial Sites Day at Eger Castle returns May 9 with reenactors and curator-led tours—and a fresh opening of the Valide Sultan Bath ruins. An interactive exhibition now brings the remarkably preserved Turkish-era steam bath to life.
Dinner, Cats, and Choirs
On May 9, Dinner with an Eger Winemaker features Marcell Bukolyi at BORÁG Restaurant—more than a tasting, it’s a memory-making food-and-wine immersion. May 9–10, the Cattus Invictus International WCF Cat Show brings dozens of handsome felines and rare breeds after drawing 3,000+ visitors last time. That same evening, the Agria Mixed Choir’s Summer-Welcoming Concert greets the sunniest season with tradition and fresh harmonies.
Yoga, Brunch, and Bloom
On May 10, Blooming Yoga & Brunch unfolds on a Tuscan-feel estate in the Szépasszony Valley (Valley of the Beautiful Woman): an energizing session with Anita, sound-bowl relaxation, then a lavish smorgasbord in the greenhouse.
What’s Next
Beyond May 10, the city keeps humming. The World I Gaze Into and The Sacredness of Life return mid-month, alongside the Three of a Kind photo show. On May 13, Barna Baranyai’s The Border of Stupidity riffs on wild headlines and the eternal question: Is there a dumbest human? The multiplex at Agria Park screens the latest premieres through May 13.
Late-May Highlights
May 14 brings Szak(ma)rket, the local producer-and-craft fair in the Civil Communities House courtyard, plus The Props Master with András Kern at Bartakovics ($15.90). May 15 stacks up Zorán in concert at Dr. Ferenc Kemény Sports Hall ($42.40), Dr. Gábor Zacher’s no-taboo talk on toxins and addictions, and FREDDIE – Soul Diver: Inner Fire at EKMK ($26.40). On May 16, Adorján Illés recounts his Round-the-World Bike Journey—39 countries, 28,583 miles, 1,473 days—free entry; a 16+ puppet-theatre piece Don’t Let Me Go runs 90 minutes at Harlekin; the Hungarian National “Visszavágta” thunders into town as a motor cavalcade of solidarity; an 80 Minutes Around the World in Eger downtown walk spins global links; the Ariel Youth and Children’s Theatre guests with Once Upon a Time; Piazza Culinaria turns the Quasi courtyard into a chic Neapolitan piazza; and Runners’ Loops Day celebrates communal miles over personal bests.
Feast of Pentecost
Pentecost weekend (May 22–25) packs Eger Castle with VárReDesign Fest—hands-on sustainability talks, demos, workshops, family games, and recycled crafts. On May 23, the Kadarka Vineyard Hike & Wine Tour returns, ending with a panoramic dinner and guided tasting atop Síkhegy. The same day, a Spring Detox Yoga with Rose Milk ritual and meditation nurtures calm. Moodgarden teams with Katasztrófa Sújtotta Terület (Disaster Area) for a pop-rock-blues blowout. In the Szépasszony Valley (Valley of the Beautiful Woman), the Pentecost Cellar Tour pours bright, aromatic whites and rosés. Families can also dive into the child-friendly gyeREe-museum programs at the castle May 23–25.
Closing Notes
On May 17, the famed Eger Flea Market sprawls across downtown, while operetta icon Marika Oszvald headlines A tűzről pattant. Later in the month, Eliza Aux launches The Golden Ink, a new chapter in the Írósuli (Writers’ School) saga, with an author meet-and-greet. And on May 24, the play Too Sharp probes survival, burnout, and the fragility of relationships—with tension, humor, and unflinching honesty.
