dónde: 3300 Eger

Eger is packing late May and early June with concerts, exhibitions, markets, films, wine adventures, kids’ days, and a fresh wave of theater. From Basilica organ bursts to LEGO towers, from Kadarka vines to open-stage poetry, the city turns into a roaming culture map—often literally, across multiple venues.

Art, film, and the sacred

On May 18, a plain-language talk on contemporary visual art features artist and associate professor Lajos Csontó, dean at EKKE’s Faculty of Arts, co-hosted by Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (Eszterházy Károly Katolikus Egyetem) and the Dobó István Castle Museum (Dobó István Vármúzeum). The same week, the 16th János Blaskó Painting Memorial Competition exhibition opens at the Béla Bartakovics Community House (Bartakovics Béla Közösségi Ház), honoring the painter who led the Drawing Department at the Eger Teacher Training College (Egri Tanárképző Főiskola) for two decades. The Eventus Art Vocational High School (Eventus Művészeti Szakgimnázium) has staged the contest for 16 years; the show highlights the strongest works.
From May 18–24, The Sanctity of Life traveling exhibition in the Basilica presents Saint Gianna Beretta Molla (1922–1962), patron of mothers, physicians, and unborn children. On May 19, EKKE Cinema screens Beléd estem, a 93-minute Hungarian rom-com. From May 19–24, the Mindhárom exhibit brings three Hungary-born giants of photography to town: André Kertész the most successful, László Moholy-Nagy the most valuable, Robert Capa the most famous—arriving with standout works.

Body, mind, and market mornings

May 20 brings a free wellness talk, Rethinking Everyday Fitness, at the Pál Tittel Library (Tittel Pál Könyvtár) with strength coach Attila Major of the Hungarian Water Polo Association: how to juggle work, movement, nutrition, and rest. On May 21, Szak(ma)rket returns 8:00–13:00 in the Civil Communities House courtyard—local producers and artisans from Heves County with flavors, colors, and stories. The same day: a book launch for Tímea Takácsné Csontos’s My Book: Fearsome Memories, in conversation with librarian Bea Farkas, plus a gratitude wall and on-site cash book sales and signings. Also May 21: a Pentecost Concert in the Felnémet St. Rosalia Catholic Church with the Farkas Ferenc Music School symphony, conducted by László Gulyás.

From nightingales to redesigning the castle

On May 22, two routes to unwind: The Night of the Nightingales 2026 event led by Andrea Anna Pálfy invites bird-listening under the stars, while singer Lili Mácsár plays Koka’s courtyard with guitar, ukulele, and—bravely—her first public piano set, mixing new songs and heartfelt covers. From May 22–24, VárReDesign Fest: Pentecost at Eger Castle focuses on sustainability with talks, demos, workshops, family games, and craft encounters. Visitors can turn recycled materials into personal notebooks or handbags and discover how folk culture anticipated reuse—traced through the museum’s collections.

Pentecost weekend: wine, dance, LEGO, organ

May 23 pours into the Valley of the Beautiful Woman (Szépasszony-völgy) for a Pentecost Cellar Tour tasting the Eger Wine Region’s crisp, fragrant, fruit-driven whites and rosés. A separate Cup of Moon workshop offers Spring Detox Yoga with a Rose Milk ritual, guided meditation, journaling, and a supportive women’s circle. The Kadarka Vineyard Walk & Wine Tour on May 23 steps between vines to meet the grape where it begins, finishing with a panoramic dinner and guided tasting on Síkhegy. For soundtracks, Moodgarden & Katasztrófa Sújtotta Terület crash pop, rock, blues, beat—and a lot of harmonica—while a belly dance evening with Samirah swaps Eger for an Eastern dreamscape. Bohemian Feast 6 pairs premium gastronomy, cigars, and live music at Wanda Bor & Pogácsaház. A Polish Folklore Night brings regional ensembles Małe Pieniny and Pienińskie Wiyrchy with songs, polkas, and signature Pieniny dances across generations.
May 23–24, Kockanapok: a LEGO build exhibition and playhouse. Also, short organ recitals in the Basilica (20–30 minutes) feature J. S. Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne. From May 23–25, “gyeREe-museum, Pentecost at Eger Castle” extends special programming.

Stages, screens, and open doors

On May 24, Too Sharp, a play about survival, burnout, and fragile relationships under the strain of healthcare, hits the stage. The Blaskó exhibition continues May 25–26, and The Sanctity of Life returns May 25–31 in the Basilica. On May 26, EKKE Cinema shows Exhibition: Frida (2020), a 90-minute English-language documentary that animates Kahlo’s art and lets her narrate through diaries, letters, essays, and interviews. On May 27, Business Beats—the Junior Achievement Hungary roadshow—lands in Eger to connect young people with local entrepreneurs through real stories instead of textbooks. Also May 27: the Literary Radio (Irodalmi Rádió) presents Petra Varga’s poetry volume I Would Fly Over the Water.

Movies, talks, and a new theater era

Through May 27, What’s On (Miziműsor), the multiplex lineup at Agria Park, promises premieres and a big snack bar. On May 28, Iron Clapping (Vass-taps) returns to KOKA Gallery’s ivy courtyard for free-flow chats with silk and textile painter Gabi Varró, world traveler and tour guide Balázs Kiss, and host Judit Vass—coffee, spritz, and gallery treats included.
May 29 brings a personal monodrama, The Snow Dusts, or Easy for You, Józsi Szarvas, part of the 26/27 GÁRDONYI // OPEN_SPACE FESTIVAL, based on Kossuth and Mari Jászai Award-winner József Szarvas’s memoir, co-written by László Bérczes. The same day, a 275-minute English-audio Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair slices across the Urania Cinema. Also, The Sun’s Courtyard, a studio-intimate cross-arts improvisation blending operatic voice, contemporary dance, and visual art through a modern lens on Baroque spirit. Gárdonyi Unplugged turns the theater buffet into an open stage for poems and prose long hidden in your phone notes. Later, Kóda plays fresh songs in a garden setting.
From May 29–31, the 26/27 GÁRDONYI // OPEN_SPACE FESTIVAL is the Gárdonyi Géza Theatre’s new leadership debut, revealing next season’s plans and artists and tightening community bonds with backstage tours, city cycling, and “Season-Announcement Conversations.” Also that weekend: a Škoda Meet.

Final May highlights and June lift-off

On May 30, Back to Floyd modernizes the Pink Floyd legacy with digital tech fused to live instruments. Pianist-singer night: Mátyás Svéd and Elemér Báder pair a single piano with a single voice—and a good glass of wine. Children’s Day lights up Agria Park’s ornamental garden 10:00–16:00. Dessert: Andrea Malek and Adrián Kovács revive classics by Kurt Weill, George Gershwin, Mihály Eisemann, and Szabolcs Fényes, in a jazz-leaning, contemporary vibe on the Gárdonyi main stage (tickets 5,000 HUF–5,000 HUF; note: listing reflects typed range). May 30–31, more Basilica organ mini-concerts.
May 31 brings Weightlessness, a two-voice monodrama inspired by Viktor Pelevin’s Omon Ra from the University of Theatre and Film Arts—deadpan humor and grotesque thought-provocation. The Eger Antique Fair fills the old-town streets with furniture, books, porcelain, paintings, and rare finds. The Castle’s Children’s Day offers the new Stonecraft Adventure (Kövi kaland) activity booklet and the beloved Sebő’s Dream family game to explore the exhibition The Story of Eger Castle. Also: backstage tours at the theater and a citywide Children’s Day. Early June extends The Sanctity of Life (June 1–7, then 8–14), and the Basilica’s organ series runs weekly June–September with 2,000 HUF admission. June 4, Kowalsky and the Vega (Kowalsky meg a Vega) play Agria Park’s garden. June 5 features Generational Knots, an improv comedy on family patterns, plus two Apostol concerts titled We Can’t Live Without You! (tickets 9,990 HUF–11,990 HUF). June 5–7: Auto Show Eger spreads more than 6,000 m² of vintage and race cars at the city sports hall. June 6 walks Downtown Nature (Belvárosi természet)—heritage gardens, protected tree elders, and prize-winning chestnut rows—then the operetta Me and My Little Brother (Én és a kisöcsém) returns (tickets 6,000 HUF–7,000 HUF). June 7 closes with Girls, Boys—Rozi Lovas’s one-woman performance on love, loss, and the labyrinth we built together. June 10, Szak(ma)rket producer and craft market pops back up 8:00–13:00 in Eger.
