Exhibitions and Visual Arts

June 15–19 brings DIPLOMA “26,” the showcase and defenses of EKKE’s Institute of Media and Design graphic design BA and MA graduates. Running in parallel, Individual Identity in a Global World explores personal identity and global self-positioning with works from painting to mixed media (June 15–19, then extended June 22–26). At Bartakovics Béla Community House, photographer Sándor Kéri’s My Numbers in Threes (June 15–20) hangs beside Survivors (June 15–20), a photo exhibition honoring the determination of women who overcame cervical cancer. Kata Válócz-Major’s SZELF fills Agria Park Gallery with free entry (June 7–25 and again June 22–28), while Derengő valóság, a memorial to painter Ernő Nagy, appears at the Dobó István Castle Museum and Ziffer Sándor Gallery (June 20–21 and June 23–28).

Film, Literature, and Stage

Agria Park’s multiplex runs fresh premieres all week (June 15–21 and June 22–28). EKKE Mozi screens the French comedy Reggeli a hegyen (Breakfast on the Mountain), 95 minutes, on June 16, and Mennyei zűrzavar (Heavenly Chaos), 91 minutes, on June 23. On June 16, actor Pál Mácsai opens his workshop in Műhelylátogatás, performing Arany, Petőfi, Ady, Babits, Kosztolányi, Karinthy, Dsida, József Attila, Radnóti, Villon–Faludy, Nemes Nagy, Pilinszky, Orbán Ottó, Petri, Parti Nagy, and István Kemény—tickets from $13.80 to $16.60. June 25 celebrates the poet Attila József with Szeressetek szilajon, an evening with Tamás Jordán and the bands Kaláka and Sebő.

City Sounds and Sacred Music

June 17 turns Eger’s old town into a roaming choir with Sétáló Énekszó by the Agria Mixed Choir. The Basilica hosts The Sacredness of Life, a traveling exhibit on Saint Gianna Beretta Molla (June 15–21 and June 22–28), plus compact organ recitals Friday to Sunday (June 19–21) with J. S. Bach, Franck, Boëllmann, Dubois, and Vierne; entry about $5.50 from the Basilica Visitor Center. On June 19, free Térzene brass music rings from City Hall’s balcony; on June 21, Toronyzene carries from the Cistercian Church with the Liszt Academy trombone quartet. That morning, The Praise of Beauty is a free matinee by the Eger Symphony Orchestra, and Szent nevednek éneklek szüntelen features Benedetto Marcello’s David Psalms.

Wine, Walks, and Nighttime Magic

June 18 dives into nature with a woodpecker lecture, making conservation accessible for all ages. The same day, sip history on a Wine Walk in Eger Castle with the Szuromi Family Estate: legends, vintages, and 16th-century echoes in one tour. June 19 focuses on Eger’s whites: five wines guided by a sommelier, with savory pastries and cheeses; if the skies are kind, it’s out on the sundeck by beanbags. Also on the 19th: a city tour decoding lunar phases at dusk, an acoustic twist from Börleszk (the Cabaret Band’s latest), a free Song of Songs at Farkas Ferenc Music School with actress Anna Györgyi, an upbeat Season-Opener Show by the Egri Majorette Association (Egri Majorette Egyesület) and the Szihalom Wind Band, rapper MISSH at Broadway Monkey, and rock outfit Kárpátia outdoors.

Museums at Night: June 20

Hungary’s 25th Night of Museums (Múzeumok Éjszakája) takes over Eger. Expect programs at the Basilica; the Archdiocesan Library; the Archbishop’s Palace Visitor Center; the Observatory and Science Experience Center; Ziffer Sándor Gallery; the Géza Gárdonyi Memorial House with Flavors in a Jar, a culinary–literary journey; Tittel Pál Library; the Valide Sultan Hamam bath ruins; and especially Eger Castle, where the Dobó István Castle Museum opens multiple spaces with family-friendly shows and an exhibition launch. Vintage cars prowl the city center for time-travel rides supporting vehicle preservation and local community programs. The Chapel of the English Ladies (Angolkisasszonyok) hosts In the Footsteps of King Solomon (Salamon király nyomában) by the Savaria Baroque Orchestra. Agria Mozi premieres HOBO – Being on the Road Is Happiness (Úton lenni boldogság), a 93-minute 2026 Hungarian road movie.

St. John’s Eve on Síkhegy

June 20 glows on Síkhegy: the Tóth family’s (TÓTHÉK) St. John’s Night picnic, a Magical St. John’s Night by Tóth Ferenc Winery, and St. John’s Eve bonfires (Szent Iván-éji tűzgyújtás) bring the Lobbanáspont fire-juggling troupe under the Poplar for dazzling night rituals. A six-wine tasting led by Katalin Tóth pours Egri Csillag 2025 PREMIER, Egri Csillag Superior 2024 PREMIER, Rhine Riesling Superior 2024 PREMIER, Kadarka Siller 2025 PREMIER, Kadarka 2024 PREMIER, and Várvédő Egri Bikavér Grand Superior 2022 Sík-hegy vineyard, with food by Fázis Koszt & Kávé. Elsewhere, a witchy St. John’s Night Walk embraces the year’s most mystical evening. The Trashmadonna trio drives a New Wave tour through the ’80s and ’90s.

Trails, Yoga, and Streets

The Beehive Stones Performance Hike (Kaptárkövek) on June 20 unlocks Bükkalja’s volcanic lore across 9.3, 18.6, and 31.1 miles, from beehive stones to panoramic crests, plus flavors of the wine region. June 20 also marks International Day of Yoga celebrations in town; on June 21, greet sunrise with a mass Sun Salutation on Dobó Square. The same day, the Antiques Fair floods the historic center with furniture, books, porcelain, paintings, and curios.

Baroque, Folk, and Festival Fever

Bükk Arts Days – Baroque Festival (June 19–21) spreads concerts across Eger and its Baroque gems. June 20 stages J. Haydn’s The Diva (Az énekesnő) at Bartakovics Béla Community House, plus the musical Made in Hungary (Made in Hungária), fizzing with Hungária hits Viva Rock and Roll, Csókkirály, and the title track. A guided city walk the same day delivers the essentials of Eger’s story in 90 minutes. June 25–28, the fortress hosts the HDH-IAA Historical Archery European Championship and a parallel international tournament, with thematic tours on the castle’s military past. Also June 25–28: the 46th Kaláka Festival, an all-arts celebration with theater, verse-theater, kids’ shows, exhibitions, and a folk-art market.

Closing Week Highlights

June 26 doubles down on musical city tours with Botond Rázsi, starting from City Hall at 2 Dobó István Square. The Kaláka stage lights up with Bea Palya; folk-jazz powerhouse János Csík and Mezzo (Csík János és a Mezzo); Amor fati’s world-folk experiments; and István Pál Szalonna and His Band (Pál István Szalonna és bandája) leading a communal dance. The Eszterházy Alumni Wine Club gathers grads and locals to taste Korózs wines. On stage, The Paul Street Boys (A Pál utcai fiúk) reimagines Ferenc Molnár’s classic with songs by Dés and Geszti and lyrics by Grecsó. And throughout June 13–25, the A&B Multilingual Interdisciplinary Studio’s Disciples exhibition holds the upper floor at Agria Park by Hervis.

Eger in late June? Come for the history, stay for the nights—lit by organ pipes, film reels, fire dancers, and a thousand glasses raised.
