Eger’s Summer 2026: Festivals, Theater, Wine, Classics
Eger Summer 2026: festivals, theater, exhibitions, open-air cinema, family shows, symphony, and the 30th Eger Wine Celebration across iconic venues, June 11–July 19. Culture, concerts, and wine in Eger’s green heart.
dónde: 3300 Eger

Eger rolls out a packed summer of culture, concerts, open-air cinema, exhibitions, family shows, and its signature wine celebrations across multiple venues from June 11 to July 19. From contemporary art and classic Hungarian tales to symphonic sets in the park and a three-decade-old wine fest, the city’s green heart beats loud all July.

Theater, Tales, and Thought-Provoking Nights

On July 7, the Hamajdlesz Theater Association (Hamajdlesz Színházi Egyesület) stages Totócskáim, a two-act reworking of István Örkény’s tragicomedy The Toth Family (Tóték), and the folk-tale play The Rátót Hometown’s Colt’s Egg (Rátóti csikótojás) for families and kids 6+. The troupe keeps the momentum on July 8 with Mattie the Goose-boy (Lúdas Matyi), their upbeat, mixed-media version of Mihály Fazekas’s classic about wit beating brute force, plus Zoltán Egressy’s bittersweet Portugal (Portugál) in one act—a small village frozen in time, a boy dreaming of Portugal, and the quiet ache of unrealized desires. The reflective tone continues the same evening with Filo-Teaház: Buried at 25—Survival or Real Life?, a Stoic-philosophy-guided conversation (intro + three 20-minute roundtables). On July 9, The Drunks (Részegek) (16+) digs into Europe’s value crisis through brutally honest, confession-like voices. July 10 adds Ferenc Molnár’s evergreen farce The Play’s the Thing (Játék a kastélyban), because sometimes the right story really does save everything. July 11 turns the screws with Sweet Anna (Édes Anna), a stark look at helplessness, loneliness, and the absence of love, while families can circle back to The Rátót Hometown’s Colt’s Egg (Rátóti csikótojás). On July 12, Mattie the Goose-boy (Lúdas Matyi) returns once more, and József Szarvas’s The Snow Blows (Pustol a hó), inspired by the book he co-wrote with László Bérczes, brings a personal stage evening.

Exhibitions and Open Studios

From July 7–12, Glimmering Reality (Derengő valóság) honors painter Ernő Nagy at the István Dobó Castle Museum’s Sándor Ziffer Gallery (Dobó István Vármúzeum, Ziffer Sándor Galéria). The 25th International Hungarian Photo Salon – Uplands Region (XXV Nemzetközi Magyar Fotószalon – Felvidék) hangs free through July 16 at Agria Park. Contemporary art and a working studio open again at 28 Dobó István Street with an ongoing series centered on Erzsébet F. Balogh, winner of the Géza Gárdonyi Prize; Open Studio days: July 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30 from 3:00–6:00 p.m. Best of Diploma 2026 showcases standout graduation works from Eszterházy Károly Catholic University’s Faculty of Arts, July 8–12. The Egri Öltögető embroidery circle closes its season with a display at the Pál Tittel Library (Tittel Pál Könyvtár) (July 6–10). Sacred Lives, a traveling exhibition on Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, fills the Basilica July 6–12. Also at Agria Park, Existence (Létezés) exhibits works by 41 artists from across the country, July 6–12. And the Dobó28 art space continues its summer program of contemporary showcases and open studios.

Premieres, Poetry, and Pop-Up Music

July 8 sneaks in a pre-premiere of Moana—the live-action take on the Oscar-nominated animated adventure—as Moana heeds the ocean’s call and sails beyond Motonui’s reef with the demigod Maui. That same night, Geng a gangon promises an intimate, starlit literary and audio evening: five young performers, contemporary poems and songs about love, loneliness, yearning, and the truths hiding in silence. Later, CC116 drops a free alt-leaning set as part of Hamajdlesz Fest, after a musical journey spanning rock, pop, punk, and back to their own alternative sound.

Bars, Bands, and Big Stages

Live, classy bar music returns July 6–8 with the 16th György Szepesi Bar Musicians’ Festival (XVI Szepesi György Bárzenész Fesztivál). From July 9–11, the Star of Eger Stage (Egri Csillag Színpad) curates an ongoing music flow inside the 30th Eger Wine Celebration: July 9 features Aposztréfa, Kóda (unplugged), and Trampúr; Punnany Massif headlines with their live-band hip-pop blend of funk-rock, folk, and electronics honed since 2003. July 10 adds Liana, Józsi Hegedűs solo, Kerekes Band’s Ethno Funk—Moldavian and Gyimes vibes smashed into riffy flutes and koboz—and Hiperkarma. July 11 turns up Stereo Swing’s Gatsby-laced electro-swing, Group’n’Swing’s showstopping boogie-swing legacy, AWS’s rock energy, and Gorg & Benzol on the Csillag stage.

Wine, Food, and Market Feels

The 30th Eger Wine Celebration (July 9–11) floods the Archbishop’s Garden (Érsekkert) with tastings, stories, and lazy summer meetups. ZuzmÓ! returns lakeside with smoky plates, great tunes, and two standout wineries. Juhász 30 turns the Juhász Brothers Winery’s two-level pavilion into a Jubilee All-Inclusive hub July 10–11: fine wines and sparkling, a three-course dinner, and celebrating with the Juhász family—perfect for slipping out of the festival whirl. Thursday’s Szak(ma)rket producers’ market (July 9, 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.) spotlights Heves County flavors and craft. A broader Producers’ Market and Craft Fair greets July 11 on Katona Square with full-on summer vibes. And Manooka Café marks its 8th birthday July 10 with a cheerful, family-friendly afternoon.

Classics Under Trees and Under Stars

On July 11 at 5:00 p.m., the Eger Symphony Orchestra plays Evergreens in the Green (Örökzöldek a zöldben) in the Archbishop’s Garden (Érsekkert), conducted by Máté Szabó Sipos. Expect crowd-pleasers by Rossini, Berlioz, Verdi, Offenbach, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, and J. Strauss. Every Friday to Sunday, the Basilica resounds with organ mini-concerts (20–30 minutes) at noon on Fridays and Saturdays, and 12:45 p.m. on Sundays; tickets are about $5.40 per person from the Basilica Visitor Center.

Wheels, Walks, Wellness

Vintage lovers converge July 9–11 at the 11th Rolling Through the Past (Gurul a Múlt) meet and exhibition inside the picturesque Lajos Szmrecsányi Garden (Érsekkert), perfectly timed with the wine fest. On July 11, lace up for a Dangerous Liaisons in Eger (Veszedelmes viszonyok Egerben) themed walk, gathering at 5:30 p.m. by the Turkish Bath park, blending spicy local stories with relationship insights. A classic 90-minute guided city walk also runs, serving essential history and insider bearings. And the Pölöskei Beach Health & Sport Festival (Pölöskei Strand) returns July 11 with fitness star Balázs Czanik—move, laugh, recharge, because wellness pairs well with summer.

Family Screens and Retro Dreams

Hamajdlesz Fest sets up free open-air films: July 10 screens A Kind of America (Indul a bakterház), a beloved Hungarian comedy staple; July 11 plays Mamma Mia for singalong sunshine. Elsewhere, the Ottoman Tent hosts a cozy, carpeted Grease night on July 11 with 1950s dress-up encouraged and a prize for the best vintage look. The party rolls on until midnight with rock ’n’ roll hits, snacks, and chilled drinks under the stars.
