Musicals Under the Stars

Veres 1 Színház revives Amerikai komédia (American Comedy) on July 1 at 21:00 at the Kálmán Imre Open-Air Stage. Based on Károly Aszlányi’s 1930s hit and reset on the 1938 luxury liner La Paz en route to Monte Carlo, it’s all whip-smart banter, mistaken passions, and big band swing. Meet Tony, the tireless young businesswoman; her charming rogue foil; a moneyed, hapless fiancé; a terrified husband under a tyrannical wife; a dithering secretary twice transformed by a Tibetan singing bowl; and Tony’s mother, determined to look a decade younger than her daughter. Lőrinczy Attila wrote the libretto and lyrics, with music by Artisjus- and Fonogram-winning composer-saxophonist Bársony Bálint, directed by Károly Peller. Cast includes Janza Kata/Horváth Mónika, Simon Kornél, Bálint Ádám, and more, plus a full dance company. Running time: 100 minutes plus intermission. Tickets: Category I 12,000 HUF (about 33 USD), II 11,000 HUF (30 USD), III 9,000 HUF (25 USD), IV 7,500 HUF (21 USD).

On July 9 at 21:00, Vörösmarty Színház brings Hegedűs a háztetőn (Fiddler on the Roof), rain date July 10 at 21:00. Tevye fights to marry off his five daughters and keep faith and tradition intact amid rising antisemitism, pogroms, and forced migration. Tickets: Cat I 14,000 HUF (39 USD), II 12,000 HUF (33 USD), III 11,000 HUF (30 USD), IV 9,000 HUF (25 USD).

On July 15 at 20:00, A dzsungel könyve (The Jungle Book) by Pannon Várszínház reframes Kipling’s tale as a mirror of human society, where animals embody our better selves and Mowgli wrestles with nature’s law and human cunning. Direction by László Vándorfi, choreography by György Krámer and László Bóbis, music direction by Zsuzsa Regovics. Tickets: 10,000 HUF (27 USD), 9,000 HUF (25 USD), 8,000 HUF (22 USD), 7,000 HUF (19 USD); rain date July 16, 20:00.
