July 11 marks the eleventh Night of the Chairlifts, when Hungary’s mountain lifts run late into the evening for twilight and after-dark rides. This year, chairlifts in the Mátra (Mátra), Bükk (Bükk), Zemplén (Zemplén), and Buda Hills (Budai-hegység) ranges join the program, giving riders sweeping sunset views and a lit-up cityscape from a fresh angle.
Where to Ride
Hop on at Lillafüred Chairlift Park (Lillafüredi Libegőpark) in the Bükk, Oxygen Adrenaline Park at Sástó (Sástói Oxygen Adrenalin Park) in the Mátra, and Zemplén Adventure Park (Zemplén Kalandpark) in Sátoraljaújhely (Sátoraljaújhely), with the Buda Hills (Budai-hegység) lifts also opening for the festivities. The network spans the northern and western hills, making it easy to pick a peak and glide above forests and valleys well past dusk.
Why It’s Special
It’s not just about the views—though those are stellar. The after-hours vibe turns familiar trails into a nocturnal escape, mixing cool night air with the slow float of gondolas and chairs. Whether you’re chasing the last blush of sunset or the sparkle of a glowing town, it’s a rare, mellow way to see the mountains at night.
